Read through the information below detailing steps to take before and after your website launches. 

Before Launch

check boxAnyone working on the website should know that they need to email the OpenScholar support team for urgent needs
check boxTo apply your current domain name to your new website, submit a support ticket
check boxSet the website visibility to "public" before site launch
check boxCheck to make sure that all internal & external links are working
check boxCheck that all downloadable files such as PDFs work and have understandable file names
check boxMake sure that Google Analytics ID has been added (if using)
check boxMake sure URLs are names correctly (OpenScholar generates a URL automatically, but if you renamed a page, the URL does not update automatically)
check boxCheck to see that you have created a privacy policy page for your website
check boxEnsure that content is marked-up semantically (<h2>, <h3>, etc.) and formatted correctly

After Launch

check boxReview your user list to remove people who no longer need the ability to edit the website
check boxGoogle will automatically re-index your site fairly quickly, but you can speed up the process by using Google's Webmaster Tools to request that Google re-index the site
check boxDouble check that all internal links work


Apply a Custom Domain to Your Site

What is a Custom Domain?

A custom domain is a URL for your site that differs from the default URL.

When you create a website on OpenScholar, it will receive a default URL, such as: projects.iq.harvard.edu/poetry

However when your website goes live, you'll likely want to use a custom domain such as: poetry.fas.harvard.edu

Applying Your Custom Domain

If this is a new domain, please be sure to read Get a Harvard Domain.

Before you start this process make sure your site is ready to launch. Please send your requests in at least 3 business days in advance of your planned launch and we will work with you to schedule this custom domain.

To apply a custom domain to your OpenScholar site, please send an email request to HUIT helpdesk at ithelp@harvard.edu, and provide answers to the following questions:

  1. What is your current OpenScholar site URL? (example: projects.iq.harvard.edu/poetry)
  2. What is your custom domain URL? (example: poetry.fas.harvard.edu)
  3. Do you want a www redirect for this URL? (example: www.poetry.fas.harvard.edu would redirect to poetry.fas.harvard.edu)
  4. Is this a new domain?
  5. What date and time would you like this domain applied to your site? (ASAP is also an option. NOTE: This is not a guarantee but we will try our best to accommodate specific requests)

*Note - Both the default url and the custom domain will point to your OpenScholar site as of May 23, 2016
